AL HIRSCHFELD (1903-2003) was a serious creative person, working in watercolors and lithographs. He is far better known, yet, for his caricatures of amusement scenes and people. Afterward working every bit art director at early moving-picture show studios, he published his first newspaper caricature in 1925. His clever drawings graced the covers of such publications as Television Guide, Time and Rolling Stone, and were featured on two postage stamp stamps. "The Line Male monarch," as he was called in an Oscar-nominated 1996 film, worked for the New York Times for over seventy years.
